This section details how to open various types of files that are found both on Pearson sites, and on the internet in general.
ISBN Numbering
The International Standards Organisation (ISO) has approved changing the length of the ISBN from 10 to 13 digits, effective from 1st January 2007. The standard is being changed in order to expand the numbering capacity of the ISBN system and alleviate shortages.
The new ISBN-13 will match the 13-digit Bookland EAN number which already appears within the barcode of every book. During 2006, you can continue to use the 10-digit ISBN to order any Pearson Longman title.
Pdfs (Portable Document Format)
PDF files are in a special format to ensure that when downloading to any machine they will look, and print as originally intended.
You can download and install the latest Adobe Acrobat Reader from Adobe's website, or click this icon. Please note that you may have to restart your machine after installing Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Audio files
These are predominantly in mp3 format, although there are some of the popular Real Media files located on Pearson's sites as well.
For PC Users
The Real Player is is available in two formats. a player with premium features that are available at a cost, and a basic version of RealPlayer that lets you play the latest media formats. This is available as a free download and can be downloaded from www.real.com . You will need to navigate by clicking on 'Real Player', ensuring that you download the free version.
Another popular choice for playing MP3's on a PC is WinAmp, which is installed with Netscape as standard. This is available from http://www.winamp.com/ for users of Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
For MAC Users
Apple users can use Apple's free QuickTime player, available from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/ , to play mp3 files. Apple users can also download the basic version of RealPlayer from www.real.com.
Video files
The most common video format on Pearson's websites is Apple's QuickTime Movie format, again the free plug-in software for your browser to play these files can be found at Apple's website, http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/qt/. The other common video format is playable using Macromedia's Flash Player, see below for more details.
Flash files
Macromedia's Flash Player is a common plug-in that allows various interactive exercises, demos and videos to be played through the browser, as well as providing a means of delivering animation to a webpage.
Both Mac and PC versions are available directly from Macromedia's website, at www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayerbutton . If you do not have the player installed it is likely that either full pages, or parts of pages, which use Flash elements, will not be displayed properly .
It is advisable to install the latest edition to ensure that the Flash movie is displayed and functions as intended.
