Teacher's Tips
Penguin Young Readers Chants make learning English fun. These short memorable rhymes re-tell the story and help children remember the important vocabulary and phrases.

There are three chants for every Penguin Young Reader, available as written texts and recorded on the audio cassette that accompanies each book.

How do I use Chants with my students?
Follow this 5-step plan:

  1. Play the tape and let children listen to the chant.

  2. After they have heard the tape let pupils read the chant.

  3. Without looking at the chant, ask (older) pupils to write down what they think they have heard, line by line.

  4. Play the chant again and let pupils read the chant or recite the chant from memory, listening at the same time.

  5. Play part of the tape (perhaps one line or one verse) and let pupils repeat what they have heard before playing it back. This can be done with the whole class at once, or you can split the class into groups or pairs.

Where can I find the Chants?
You can find the Chants either in the back of the Readers, or you can download them from here.
